Welcome
to BEYOND THE FIRE, a non-commercial, educational website
that introduces you to the stories of 15 teenage war
refugees, the challenges they have faced, and the conflicts
in their home countries. This site is hosted by Independent
Television Service (ITVS) a nonprofit organization that
funds independently produced programming for public
television and the Web.
Before using this site, you
must read and agree to the following terms and conditions
by checking the box at passport sign-in that says, “I
have read and agree to the Terms and Conditions of this
site.” Reading this Agreement will help you understand
the rules of this site, and how information you submit
will be used.
In exchange for accessing
and using the Site, ITVS grants you a non-exclusive,
non-transferable, limited right to access, use and display
this Website, the materials provided hereon and stream
the audio recordings on the site provided that you comply
fully with these Terms and Conditions. You agree not
to interrupt, or attempt to interrupt, the operation
of the Website in any way. You agree to be bound by
these Terms and Conditions.
One of the unique features
of BEYOND THE FIRE is a virtual passport that you can
create and retrieve each time you return to the site.
Here are the types of information that will be requested
of you when you sign up for a passport, and how that
information will be used:
Your email address will be
your user name, and along with your password will allow
you to retrieve your passport when you come back to
the site. We will not post your email address on the
web. Nor will we make your email address available to
any outside parties. We may use your email address to
send you updates about the BEYOND THE FIRE site, such
as an email newsletter. When you receive an email from
us, you will have the option to unsubscribe yourself
from the list. In the event that you forget your password,
you may request that it be sent to your email address.
This information will be
posted on your passport. We will not collect personally
identifiable information such as your last name, the
name of your school, or your address or telephone number.
If you don’t want to use your real first name,
you can use a nickname or alias. When your travelog
comments are posted to the site (see below), your first
name and birthplace will be posted with your comments.
To enhance your own personal
passport, you have the option of uploading a photo of
yourself to be your passport photo. This photo will
only appear on your own passport, which can only be
retrieved by you, using your user name and password.
The photo will never be posted anywhere on the site
or provided to any outside party. Inclusion of a photo
on your passport is strictly optional.
You will have the option to answer questions about the
stories you hear on the site and enter these in a travelog
in your own passport. Once you have gone through all
15 stories on the site, and answered all the questions,
your answers will be posted on the site. By entering
your comments in your passport, you agree that these
comments may appear on the site. The comments will be
reviewed by a moderator before being posted. Before
entering comments in your travelog, please read the
Posting Terms below.
By posting to these sections
of the site, you agree that your comments may be posted
on the Web. You will have the option to post your comments
anonymously, or to include your first name and city
and state. Before posting to Talkback, please read the
Posting Terms below.
This site is a place for
safe, constructive dialogue. If you post any of the
following, your posts will be deleted, and you may be
banned from participating in the site:
* profanity or obscenities
(i.e., "swear words"), or sexual content
(express or implied)
* personal attacks on other people including “hatespeak”
* online chat rooms or links to sites with chat rooms
* slanderous, defamatory, obscene, pornographic, threatening
or harassing comments
* materials created by someone else without their
express written permission to do so
* private or personal information that might identify
another user
* material that promotes political, social, or religious
views
* links to third party commercial Web sites
* other information that ITVS deems, in its sole discretion,
to be inappropriate for this site.
You agree that the material
you post to this site shall not be confidential.
Content that is posted to this site may be used and
reprinted by ITVS for uses outside of this Website.
However, in all cases the privacy of the individual
making the post to the site will be preserved.
You shall not post, publish,
transmit, reproduce, distribute or in any way use or
exploit any information related to this site for commercial
purposes.
In connection with your use
of this site, you shall abide by all applicable federal,
state or local laws. You agree that you will not post
anything to the site that libels, slanders, defames,
harasses, invades the privacy of anyone, or that injures
anyone, or that is obscene or indecent, or that infringes
the copyrights or trademarks of others, or that is trade
libel or disparages another’s products.
You shall not post, transmit
or make available in any way through this site any software
or other materials which contain a computer virus, trojan
horse, timebomb, worm or other rogue programming ("Rogue
Programming").
ITVS has no obligation to
detect the presence of any Rogue Programming. Any downloading
of software or other materials or any other use of the
Information on this site is at your risk, and you are
advised to take adequate precautions to minimize any
loss to your system caused by Rogue Programming, including
use of anti-virus programs and proper backup of files.
You are responsible for the
content of any information you post to this site. The
information posted to this site does not necessarily
reflect the views of ITVS and in no event shall ITVS
assume or have any responsibility or liability for any
information posted to this site or for any claims, damages
or losses resulting from the use and/or appearance of

deemed to violate these rules. ITVS has no obligation
to exercise its rights to deny access. ITVS also has
the right to terminate access to any user who infringes
copyrights or other rights. ITVS may terminate access
for users who are found repeatedly to provide or post
protected material without necessary rights and permissions.

that it has reserved herein. By submitting information
to ITVS, you grant ITVS a perpetual, royalty-free, worldwide
license to sublicense, use, transmit, copy, edit, excerpt

you have all the necessary rights to allow such license.
We cannot vouch for the accuracy,
quality or good sense of messages posted here. We do
not claim to read and evaluate them all. You must use

by ITVS from time to time and such modifications will
