The Film

Evidence Lost delves into how criminal cases are affected by lost evidence through one city’s discovery. In 2023, an email leaked to The Dallas Morning News public safety reporter Kelli Smith revealed that Dallas police had misplaced thousands of evidence files, leaving hundreds of murder cases in limbo. This series explores what ultimately caused the files to go missing, the repercussions in the justice system when evidence is lost, and the impact of the Richard Miles Act being passed, which requires police to verify that evidence was turned over.
